The Gospel for this weekend presents us with Jesus sending out the Twelve Apostles on their first mission. Notice the details: they travel light, with just sandals and a staff. No money, no extra clothes – just the essentials. This is a powerful message. Jesus is teaching them, and us, to rely on God's providence. We don't need to hoard possessions to spread the Good News.
Secondly, Jesus sends them out two by two. We are called to be missionaries, but we are not meant to go at it alone. We need the support and encouragement of fellow believers, just like the Apostles needed each other.
Finally, Jesus instructs them to accept hospitality or move on. This is a reminder that not everyone will be receptive to our message. But like the Apostles, we must persevere, trusting that God will guide our steps.
So, how can we apply this Gospel in our lives? Let us travel lighter. Let go of attachments that weigh us down, both material and emotional. Let us seek out a faith companion, someone to walk with us on our Christian journey. And finally, let us share the Good News with confidence, trusting that God will provide for our needs.
